” I can recall 3 new veterinarians marrying clients.

It isn’t simply a matter of boy-meets-girl, let alone girl-meets-girl or boy-meets-boy, it’s a matter of religion, class, ethnicity, culture, language, upbringing, societal pressures, morality, and sexuality.

Many of my South Asian friends, including myself, were not allowed to date in high school. I would jump through hoops just to see a movie alone with a boy, lying to my parents, going to the theater with a group of friends and then splitting up to meet my boyfriend when the coast was clear. (because that is when my parents were asleep, and also when the minutes were unlimited).

The conversations Michelle and Gus were having felt, at times, fun and playful, but also difficult and multifaceted conversations that people have when they really need to have a talk with someone — meaning the stakes are always high for the characters which is always good for exciting drama!

I still think there’s this taboo out there about older women and younger men falling in love and being able to make it work and in this story we really get to see them work through their issues dealing with that dynamic.

While individual relationships may have been simple, the idea of being in a relationship with a significant other has always been riddled with the complexities and nuances of being a young second-generation South Asian woman–complexities that few outside of this bubble can truly understand.We see that Gus is capable of being the one with the upper hand in his relationship with Michelle, yet extremely vulnerable and sometimes incapable of meeting Michelle where she’s at emotionally, no matter how much he says or wants to be on the page she’s on.On Menopause I also think menopause is not all that well understood by a lot of women.On Older Women/Younger Men Relationships As I started writing down their conversations, I realized that there are so few older women who openly talk about their relationships with younger guys.So this dark comedy that I began to write started to feel very realistic.
